I have been googeling everything but the kitchen sink......
CAL NG Mustangs, were they painted gray overall like the Mustangs used in Korea?
Or were they NMF, bare alum with filled panel lines and painted wings like WWII?
Most NG units were formed with D's before the H's became available.
Found out H's were not used in Korea, lightweight airframes were thought not tough enough for combat use!
Re-designed for escort duties of B-29's to Japan.

I agree. Also, those pics I've seen of P-51's in Korea, also seem to be bare metal / painted wings, although, being dull, it could be mistaken for grey.

Confirming my suspicions.
In Large Scale forum there are 51's that were planely painted all over the wing color.

I used to live 2 miles from Norton AFB and one year they had a big dog and pony show with a bunch of P-51s doing a "scramble". As I recall they were all natural aluminum.

During the early -mid 1950's my buddies and I would often ride our bicycles out to the Van Nuys ANG base to watch the F-51's as they returned from their gunnery practice. These A/C were indeed all natural aluminum finish. Their sole B-25 Michell was the same as well and the T-6's were a O/A yellow.
