Torrechiara castle is a fifteenth-century manor house with simultaneously medieval and Renaissance features; located on the top of a panoramic rocky hill at the gates of Val Parma, it is flanked by the small medieval village of Torrechiara, a hamlet of Langhirano, in the province of Parma. Wanted by Count Pier Maria II de' Rossi as a powerful defensive structure and elegant love nest for himself and his lover Bianca Pellegrini, it is considered one of the most notable, scenic and best preserved castles in Italy. Since 1911, it has been an Italian national monument. Like many castles, that of Torrechiara also seems to host a dark presence. According to legend, on full moon nights, near the Rio delle Favole, the original access route to the castle, the ghost of Pier Maria II de' Rossi would wander around in search of his beloved Bianca Pellegrini, repeating the motto "Nunc et semper" According to another version, it would instead be the ghost of a duchess, walled up alive in the manor at an unspecified time, wandering near the building.
