I stumbled on this blog post describing some of the cleanup of the post-WWII wreckage, with lots of pictures. Fascinating!

Regarding the photos posted above, as Indiana Jones would say, ῾this is sacrilege !!! these planes belong in a museum.῾

It wrenches the heart to see such pictures, considering how precious the few remaining warbirds are. But at the time, understandable. Just wish they had saved a bit more of them..
 
I have pictures from an article in National Geographics showing B-24s flown into a small, flat island until the island is full and no more can be landed. A bulldozer then breaks the backs and they are left.
