That's really interesting! I always assumed that every time the cylinder reached the heads there was an ignition.

It works like that for a 2-stroke, but no valves. It's every other time for a 4-stroke.

They DID make a few 2-stroke radials ... didn't succeed very well. Mostly small ones for light aircraft. They ALSO made 2-stroke diesels.
