Luftwaffe fighters started to get coloured I.D. markings (yellow or white) in mid August 1940, commencing with a segment on top of the rudder, and the tips of the main wings. By late August, this had extended to the engine cowling and the entire rudder, mainly in yellow by this period, although the earlier style, including white (the latter mainly JG3) could still be seen as late as early September.
