Here's the decal fix:
The kit came with optional decals with a clear film background instead of the white background so I painted out the parts that pointed down as well as the thickened sections with white paint as seen in the first picture, and overlayed them with the cut-out center of the optional decals in the second picture.

The engines have been painted and glued into the cowls. My copper paint had gone bad so when I went to Michaels craft store to find that they no longer carried Testors square bottle paint but fount a set of Sharpie metallic markers and used the bronze one. Worked out pretty good but is delicate and rubbes off eaisaly. Hopefully it will be more durable after its sealed with dull coat.

I also did the panel lines with brown tempera paint, sealed everything with dull coat and pulled off all the masking
