#2965. Good Desert shots. Both top and bottom pics show the common petrol scavenging method of hacking a hole in the fuselage just to the rear of the cockpit to get at the fuel tank. If they had asked I could tell them how to get the fuel easy!
Top shot 3+ is a Bf 109 G-2.
Lower shot 2+ is a Bf 109 G-4Trop. This has been heavily scavenged. The engine has lost virtually all accessible dressings, guns gone, magneto gone, plug leads gone, hydraulic tank gone, oil dipstick gone, upper prop blade gone, upper coolant and breather pipework gone, in fact you can see the engine breather has been removed and is lying there just this side of the prop. The engine top lid is unbolted and bent up, you can see the hole where the breather was fitted.
I guess this was well and truly worked-over by locals and allied troops.

Another observation about #2965. The upper prop blade was presumably undamaged and might have been removed for Axis or Allied use. The individual blades are removed by unbolting and taking-off a locking plate, then undoing the large 6-odd inch ring nut that secures the whole blade and blade bearing group into the Hub. However, we can see that the spinner is still fitted and that prevents doing this, as you can see in the lower blade that is still fitted. They obviously could not access or operate the spinner quick release lock. Careful study shows that the spinner has been cut-away at the top around the upper blade root area to access the blade attachment fitting. The spinner is light alloy and not difficult to cut-away.

#2975. Interesting first shot with crew clowning about, pretending to use the Starter handle on the wrong side of the aircraft!
This is a Bf 109 G-2Trop, but fitted with a G-1 pressurised type hinging canopy.
