A good photo showing an early NA-73 Mustang Mk I, one of a series taken on the day from varying angles. This one in particular is good at showing the early IFF 'cheese cutter' wire antenna that ran from the fuselage to the tip of the horizontal stabiliser - on both sides. Also shows the muzzle of the upwards firing 'automatic recognition signal device' in the upper spine of the aircraft behind the cockpit. A small detail often overlooked on this very early Mustang I - AG349 being typical of the first 50 production aircraft - is the different, more rounded carburettor air intake front section, compared to the flatter sided version fitted after the first 50 were built.

In the two photos, all NA-83 Mustang Mk I of No.170 Squadron RAF, photos taken during a visit to the Squadron whilst based at RAF Andover in November 1942, the press people arrived on 7 November 1942 and took a range of photographs, including some air to air sequences, recording activities of an Army Co-Operation Squadron. The Squadron had moved to Andover at the beginning of November and was due to participate in a major Army exercise later in the month. Interestingly, in none of the photos the aircraft are seen wearing their individual aircraft identification letters. However, in one of the other photos taken during the visit, a close up of one of the aircraft, it appears as if the individual aircraft id letter has been roughly overpainted. Whether this was done for the press visit or in connection with the exercise later in the month is unclear from the Squadron records. Good photos.

The SZ-J, a Mustang III of the Polish 316 Squadron ( the small checker of the PAF below the front exhaust pipe can be noticed ) Judging the markings it is a post-war image. The bands on the spinner and the front of the fuselage were white and red.

No.II(AC) Squadron Royal Air Force, 24 July 1942, press day for 50 members of the UK and Allied press to make the offical announcement of the Mustang in RAF service at RAF Sawbridgeworth. One of a large series of photographs taken on the day, both on the ground and during an air-to-air photo shoot. Aircraft are Mustang Is, NA-73 AG-550 XV-U and NA-83 AM112 XV-X. Note in this photo, XV-U has not yet had the yellow wing leading edge id strips painted on (ran out of time/paint before the press day) whilst XV-X in other photos clearly has the strips painted on - as do other aircraft featured in the photos taken on the day. The shiny metal surrounds to case and link ejection port on the underside of the wings of XV-X likely indicates that this aircraft has recently had the RAF A&AEE developed modifications to the wing armament to improve reliability implemented. Lots of copies of this photo floating around as it was very widely distributed to the press at the time and was also on sale for some time from one of the UK aviation magazines.

The YT code indicates the No. 65 Squadron. Quite interesting the P-51 YT-Z on the left seems to be still wearing the older RAF roundel while the kite on the right has the newer one. If Belgium it has to be the airield B60/Grimbergen,
