RAF flypast for Beckhams

By Bridget Morris

It is the most anticipated celebrity party this year – but the biggest stars at the Beckhams' charity football bash today will be three vintage second world war aeroplanes.

A Hurricane and a Lancaster from the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are scheduled to fly over David and Victoria Beckham's home in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, and formally open the couple's pre-World Cup party.

The RAF – which is footing the bill – said the flypast was a fitting way of showing support for the England team before their departure for the World Cup finals in Germany.

An RAF spokesman said the planes were already scheduled to fly at an airshow organised by the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, Cambridgeshire, today and would make an appearance at the couple's "Beckingham Palace" mansion on their way home.

"They will be returning home to Coningsby after the Duxford show anyway – and flying over Sawbridgeworth is no more than a minor diversion for them."

"The cost of the flypast will be minimal because they will already be in the air very nearby. That's why they were able to do it. Had they been in Scotland, for example, it wouldn't have been possible," he added.

The vintage aircraft are to be accompanied by planes from a private aerobatic display team, The Blades, hired by the Beckhams to entertain party guests.

The party will also include a charity auction, in aid of Unicef and the Prince's Trust – a £300,000 Bentley and a diamond necklace are up for grabs.

Footage of the party and an exclusive interview with the Beckhams will be on Scottish TV on May 28.
