Thanks to all of you for all your info and support.
I used the clay snakes to mask the upper curve of the exhaust and some tape along the wing root to spray flat black and a little reddish brown, followed by gray. The splotchy finish was not something I did even though it looks ok for an in service look. It appeared when I applied a semi gloss clear coat before decals.
Eratta; The plane number is on the inside surface of left gear door and guns mostly broken off. I just noticed I managed to position the prop to mask the CORRECT orientation of the cowl number on starboard while leaving the crooked one visible.
I want to comment on the kit; there is a separate center canopy that is slightly taller so it fits over the rear section. I would rate Eduard fit and finish slightly better than Tamiya.
