Before that I think they need to discover the concept of basic flight controls that do not involve hitting the turn signal and hoping.

I found it impressive, in its own way. A mishap was likely but I would never have guessed they could have hit the roof of a pretty tall building.

Brings to mind the guy who launched into LAX airspace using WX balloons attached to a lawn chair and then dropped the .22 rifle he had planned to use for altitude control. He got up over 10,000 ft.

Several years ago a gang of crooks managed to ambush and steal an armored car. They did not get far at all. None of them could drive a manual transmission. Getaways in first gear do not go well. They bailed out and ran.

Besides being way more fun than an automatic, manual transmissions are a good passive anti-theft device.
