Monteriggioni, Italy....
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, perched on a natural hill, built by the Sienese in 1214-1919 as a front line in their wars against Florence, taking command of the Via Cassia that passes through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west. During the conflict between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defense structure. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the troops of the Bishop of Volterra.

First time ever heard this place's name... It was in Assassin's Creed series.

Lots of good memories from the franchise.

Pampus, an artificial island near Amsterdam. Build around 1870, stripped by the Germans during ww2 and left to decay for decades. Now in the hands of some volunteers who stopped the decay, but don't try to alter it too much. You can visit it only by boat. It's half an hour sailing from the town of Muiden, which in itself is already a very interesting place to visit. All these pictures were taken with my iPhone when I visited the fort last week.

The boat trip takes you past the great castle Muyder slot.

Exterior, the fort had two big turrets

Some corridors in the fort. The fort is a big maze of rooms and corridors. Great fun to explore.

The water basin deep in the fort. A few led lights makes all the difference

An old German navy gun, ww1 era. It's been placed there a few years ago after being found on a wreck in the north sea close to Texel. Belonged to a German navy ship that sunk there.

13th-century citadel Castel del Monte, Apulia region, Southeast Italy. It was just a hunting lodge.

:D
There is a sort of logic in these things. Stockton Castle was originally built as a place to entertain, and hunting was part of entertainment. It became more and more fortified as the years went on. It could shelter the Bishops of Durham and was a great place to entertain but could not be used to house an army as a springboard to attack anywhere else. Below an impression of what it looked like.
