First time ever heard this place's name... It was in Assassin's Creed series.Monteriggioni, Italy....
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, perched on a natural hill, built by the Sienese in 1214-1919 as a front line in their wars against Florence, taking command of the Via Cassia that passes through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west. During the conflict between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defense structure. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the troops of the Bishop of Volterra.

There is a sort of logic in these things. Stockton Castle was originally built as a place to entertain, and hunting was part of entertainment. It became more and more fortified as the years went on. It could shelter the Bishops of Durham and was a great place to entertain but could not be used to house an army as a springboard to attack anywhere else. Below an impression of what it looked like.13th-century citadel Castel del Monte, Apulia region, Southeast Italy. It was just a hunting lodge.
