Appreciate the offer Terry and I may take you up on that if I don't come up with something myself. I did take look at a water bottle I had laying around and may give it a try for the side panels.

Small progress to show. The bomb bay doors were always planned by me to be closed for this build and I used, for the first time, the fully closed cast doors which, as it turned out, were not a great fit. There was some mismatch, either in the doors or in the fuselage or both that wouldn't be fixed through careful alignment so I did my best and had to resort to putty and sprue to fix the seams. The entry hatch got the sprue treatment and all of this will need to be sanded down, smoothed and rescribed.
This remains my least favourite aspect of modelling but it's necessary for coming up with a clean build. It's also the reason I'll not finish on time.

The canopy is still giving me trouble and is the main cause for me not making the deadline. There are two issues to be dealt with. The first one is the astrodome shown in Terry's Airfix part pic further above. I think I can make my own part for this by making a wooden mould and heat forming some clear plastic over it. The second one is the bulged side panels. Though I said I would live with the dorky ones that Tamiya provided, I decided to try to enhance the too-small bulges by applying layers of Testors Clear Parts Cement around the bulge. At first I tried to make my own using the separate flat panels and here's how that process looked as the glue, which is basically PVA, was applied and still wet:
It looks great at first but the big problem with this is that, although the glue dries crystal clear, it also shrinks significantly. After applying half a dozen layers to the Tamiya bulges panels, here's how they now look:
The wrinkles are quite noticeable and, quite frankly unacceptable. I'm now thinking that I will now also make the side panels from scratch, either by finding by shear fluke a section of a plastic bottle to fit or by heat forming new ones as planned with the astrodome.
None of this will happen soon and will take a certain frame of mind to achieve, something that I don't have right now.

Those side panels are almost there, apart from the wrinkles, but bloody good effort.
I hope you can get the dome and panels moulded - it may take a few attempts, but I'm sure you can get it to work.
Of course, you could always do a cheeky cheat - contact Airfix and get the canopy parts. OK, the full canopy doesn't match the Tamiya kit, but the astrodome blister (or complete roof panel) could be cut away and used, and the side panels do fit, with a little adjustment and a bead of clear filler.

Thanks Terry. Cheeky, yes and something I'm not going to pursue without having bought the kit. I'll give the heat forming a try if/when I have the mindset to get to it.
