Anyway .. I have had a close up to the both known images of the Rudorffer's kite. Unfortunately both of them are of not too great quality. But it can be noticed in the enlarged shots by Jan that the double chevron was without the black additional outline. The impression that there it was, has been caused by copying/resizing of the source scan too many times. Most of the pic scanners makes a copy of an image with an attempt to get the demarcation line between two colours there as smooth as possible. It results in three for instance, additional tones at the demacation line between the two light and dark colours. Each attempt to resize/copy of a such image without setting of the correct ( at least the same ) resolution DPI/PPI/SPI results in declining of pixels at the demarcation line. In the case we get a kind of a dark, sharp "step" between them. And this is the reason we can notice something like a dark line(s)/pxiels at the bottom "arms" of the double chevron while the top ones don't show it. Certainly there were chevrons with the double outline but not in the case IMHO. In the two enlarged shots below you may notice the effect of the pixel (quality) declining or not if the resizing is correctly ...
