That's the kind of "Go-Getum" attitude that this country was built on!...well, until we were legislated to death.
I had a friend who lived near 4-lane highway. One of his neighbors had an Ercoupe that sat at the end of his driveway. I swear, the way the thing was parked, he was thinking about flying it down the driveway and using the highway as the landing strip....never saw him do it, though.

In 1945 everyone "knew" that future aircraft would be pushers, ala the XB-42 and Lockheed Little Dipper or was it the Big Dipper?

I once saw a Bonanza come taxiing down the busy two lane road that led to the airport I was based at in MD. Turned out that the owner had switched to an empty tank when he got on downwind, deadsticked it into a berry field and then when he found out that the airplane was fine just drove it down the street to the airport - without a police escort.

As a young teen in New Orleans, I lived only a few blocks from Delgado Trade School who had an A & P program and when an engine was started, it meant a bike ride to see. Actually saw two take offs of repaired aircraft. It is now Delgado Community College. For some of those early years, a PBY sat in the front, right on City Park Ave. I and a friend, at 14 were slim enough to slip into the inspection panels on top of the wing and crawl through to the other panel in the other wing. We could raise up and out to throw acorns at the night watchman on his rounds. He never figured it out.
 

After having to work on an Ameriflight parcel freighter, you would not catch me flying on one of those rusted, falling apart pieces of shit. No thanks.

Nope, not one of those. Small local contractor, part 91 repositioning flight. Sanitary machines from a respected operator, or you wouldn't catch me there, either. Been through the ugly side of that business. Ever hear of the night it rained Caravans? One Fedex, one DHL, and a check hauler, all within an hour and a fifty mile radius.
