Bud and Ellie (since deceased) could not have been nicer to me--and others. Started corresponding with him when I was in high school, and here's the measure of the man: he wrote regularly to a 40-hr teenage pilot when he led an F-105 wing in combat. Am gratified to call such a marvelous gentleman a friend--and so are others.
 
Wow! Now that is impressive!

It is interesting that in his book he refuses to say what he was thinking about when he launched on that mission he describes at the start of the book.
Yeah, Bud's coauthor asked about that, and Bud refused to say. But imagine a 22 y/o bachelor fighter stud...

BTW, I shared this thread with Bud's son who's my webmaster. He says the family considers Bud "a tough old bird" at 102.
