    Very nice Clave.

Funny they used to lose their tales. Look sturdy enough. Anybody know exactly why they came off?

It was caused by flutter weakening the tail over time, but it seems a common enough issue with fighter aircraft of the time - flutter, instability, snap rolls, structural failure, it all comes from rushing aircraft into production - which is what you do in wartime.

The P-51 also had stability issues which could cause a roll which broke the tail.
The P-38 again had tail flutter problems.

Early versions of the He-177, and the Reggiane Re.2005 also had tail flutter.

The Yokosuka D4Y had wing flutter which meant it could not be used as a dive bomber until the structure had been re-designed.
