One of the German pilots featured in Chris Goff's Luftwaffe Fighters and Bombers liked the adjustable variable speed prop better than the constant speed prop. He could get better performance. But he noted that inexperienced pilots had a hard time finding the sweet spot.

Well, here we go again:
On social media, a news piece about Japan's JS Kaga visiting the U.S. west coast during the finalization of it's F-35B trials is circulating.

Aparently, for many, the name "Kaga" is offensive, because it "clearly shows Japan's connection to it's aggressive past" (among other ridiculous assumptions).

I tried (in vain) to point out that Japan had always named it's warships after provinces (prefectures old and current), geographic features and such, just like many other nations do (USN did this with states, state capitols, etc.).

For example, I pointed out that many of the Japanese Navy's frigates bear the same name as many WWII IJN warships, like Mogami, Mikuma, Noshiro, Agano, Kumano and so on which happen be be names of rivers.

Their carriers, Kaga, Izumo, Ise and Hyuga are all named after provinces and their Destroyers are named after mountains, like the JS Kongo and JS Kirishima (sound familiar?).

But nope, I came under fire for being sympathetic to fascists and war criminals...

There are those who have been trained to be offended by everything.

My like is for your honesty - not the actions of the mental midgets.

It does get a bit tedious doesn't it ? What are they supposed to do anyway ?

Sell the naming rights to companies as is done with sporting arenas ? JS Camry and JS Corolla perhaps ?

Is Germany next ? They have submarines with numbers rather than names - U-34 for instance - the U-boot-Klasse.

Ships include Schleswig-Holstein with the new Corvette class to include Koln and Karlsruhe.

Airfix used to offer the Lutjens class destroyer (modified US Charles F. Adams class) with the model depicting the Rommel.

Confected outrage is built in to many mental midgets these days.
That is an excellent summation of what is being dealt with here.

I'm going straight-up ... I like that the JNSDF is naming these ships after ships with storied histories and battle records.

It's a hell of a lot better than us naming capital ships after politicians and relegating Yorktown, Wasp, Hornet, Laffey and others to lesser -- or no -- ships. Spruance got a destroyer class, and Carl Vinson gets a carrier?! Give me a fucking break. Sorry to get so obscene, but there's a lot of fellatio there. Give Ray the carrier, tell Carl he's got a nice transport.

Japan names a ship Kaga? I'm glad that our ally is cottoning back onto their history, even if we caught the fat end of her bat for six months. Be proud.

Well, actually, their naming convention has changed a bit.

Their current destroyers are named after mountains, where it used to be battleships.

But since Imperial Japan rose to prominence, they have named their warships after culturally significant icons.

For example, the name Mogami (a river) has been used since 1908, when it was christened as a cruiser. Then in 1934, Mogami (again a cruiser) appeared again. In 1961, Mogami was a destroyer until 1991.
Today, Mogami is a frigate.

So there may be a pride connected to their naming convention (as it should be), but it extends far beyond the WWII period.

Not saying anyone here is like that, but from my experience usually the people who do the "Everyone gets so offended so easily," are usually the ones offended by everything. I'e., the ones calling others snowflakes tend to be some of the biggest snowflakes, offended and upset by everything that does not agree with their world view.

Hence why I live by the mantra, live and let live…
