Indeed it was a mail plane. 4 engines and 4 crew. It was actually Blériot Aéronautique's last design. In 1936, the order was cancelled forcing the company into bankruptcy.It is a civil aircraft so bailout was not normally an option anyway.
It appears to be a mail plane given there is no passenger accomodation.
