Another aspect is just why did the US subs become more efficient at sinking Japanese merchant traffic over time? It was not just better torpedoes after 1942 or more subs. It was better intelligence, putting subs in the right place at the right time to sink the traffic. That was something that really developed in the latter part of 1943.
