Just got out a map and a protractor...

1. The PBY at right is aligned with the face of Hangar 38 that runs along the channel at an angle of 20 degrees, generally ENE.

2. Sunrise on O'ahu in early December in generally out of the SE, about 315 degrees. I do have a navigational reference for this angle somewhere, but can't find it (BLAST IT!).

3. At noon, the sun is generally south, about 270 degrees.

4. In the photo, the sun's rays appear to be perpendicular to the face of the hangar and, the fore/aft axis of the PBY that is aligned with the hangar... with the sun's rays coming in at about 295 degrees.

Hence, in this (very) unscientific analysis, the shadow on the PBY indeed indicates a timestamp of perhaps 1000, or thereabouts.

I read over this thing five times.
