whilst i was staying in albury (NSW) i saw a p-40 fly over a couple of times. i then drove past the airfield and saw a dakota sitting on the air field. i was wondering how many warbirds are still airworthy and how much it would cost to fix one to airworthyness.

To put a single engined fighter back in the air would cost you at least a
million dollars, depending on it's condition at the start. Some of the aircraft
brought back from the pacific cost their owners more..... here again, because
of the condition of the airframe, missing parts, upgrading brakes and other
things, not to mention avionics. Multi-engine aircraft would, I'm sure, cost
more. A collector, in Va. Beach, Va. spent 1.25 million to put a P-40 back
into the air. Then, on top of that, there's fuel, insurance, maintenance,
and a place to keep it.

You thinking of buying one ?

Just for an example spark plugs for the merlin cost about 125usd ea and there are 24 of them. You only get so many hours out of the engine between overhauls . Even such things as tires are sometimes hard to find . The tires for the 109 are the nose wheel tires off the B57
