What a journey! Amazing stuff and great pics.

Nowadays it would be imposible, not only for the security reasons stated in the article but cos the sort of homemade repairs they did is nearly imposible in modern vehicles.
It can be done with a Renault 4L with lesser ambition :

 
I read once about a couple of buddys that in the 80's drove a CV2 by the Sáhara and the Sahel and when they run out of fuel stuck some bananas bought from some touaregs down the carb and had enough power to reach the next village with a gas station.

If you Google this it's quite a story you get but it would seem there are many versions. :lol:
