A different Kalinin. Kaliningrad was named upon Mikhail Kalinin - high ranked Chairman of something in the USSR - so far I know. Check the web for details.

He was considered an enemy of the state, as were many others. Soviet politicians who opposed or criticized Stalin were removed from office and imprisoned, or executed, by the NKVD (1936-1938), including Nikolai Bukharin, Lev Kamenev, and Grigory Zinoviev. The purges were eventually expanded to the Red Army high command, which had a disastrous effect on the military, including Marshal of the Soviet Union Mikhail Tukhachevsky. I wrote a paper on Bukharin, who was way too trusting for the times.

Years ago (maybe 10+) I posted in this forum several Romanian a/c with alpha-numeric markings (a, b etc.) with the explanation that this was the way to show that it is the second, third etc. plane with the same number (after the previous one has been shot down or damaged). Which is basically a clever way to distinguish different a/c in the same unit. I have photos of e.g. B-25 from the same BG and with the same "battle number". It was very hard to convince a fellow-modeller that this "75" is not that "75" even if they look in the very same way (actually they were very different to my eye but not to his).
