Don't leave us hanging, there's got to be an explanation for this.
I wish I knew for real, My guess, off the top of my head is they were experimenting with a way to secure and keep these large flying boats above high seas and wave damage. There are 2 boarding ladders one one each side that almost comes down to wave height. I picture a floatation platform with the 3 mounting verticals the platform is allowed to sink enough so the a/c is floating on its on and can move on. Coming back enough of the vertical mounts are above water to be able to maneuver the a/c over it settle itself over the v shaped cradle, platform rises and so does the a/c. Sounds like a lot to beat a weather problem when they could just fly out unless the a/c is a no go. somewhere to park the hanger queen when it gets windy.

Buin is on the north coast of mainland New Guinea almost directly above Port Moresby and on the north end of the Kokoda Track - Not in the Solomons,
