The Ki-44 always looked to me, like it needed a bigger prop. But a smaller diameter probably allowed a faster turning engine which allowed for more horsepower output.

Vichy D-520 in Levant wearing yellow recognition markings demanded by the Germans

This particular photo is not from the Levant but from Athens-Eleusis, Mai 26, 1941. The Dewoitines are from GCIII/6 en route Syria. They arrived in Athens from Brindisi. Apparently the yellow markings have been applied in Italy.

Prior to D-Day, they were deployed by Lacanau in the bay of Biscay.
