That may explain the smoke in the distance off the stern. The writer mentions float lights.
For day light smoke floats may have been dropped to give a wind indicator to the pilots?

Those propellers must have had a short life. Taxiing on a wet runway/taxiway can cause noticable erosion so that must really play hell with blade life
