Recovering the SOC Seaplane

That may explain the smoke in the distance off the stern. The writer mentions float lights.
For day light smoke floats may have been dropped to give a wind indicator to the pilots?

[cammerjeff]

Or a smoke marker for the plane in the picture to judge the current wind condition. Hard to be 100% sure of what it is from the picture.

That is really odd, all the small details are interesting. For a moment I thought it was the army's version of the Navel tradition of crossing the equator for the 1st time.

What's on the fuselage just below the gun turret? Looks like an emblem with "50" on it.

I think I like "Digby" better than "Bolo".

The earlier model on display at Castle is quite attractive.

USS Alaska (CB 1) - One of the ship's Curtiss SC-1 floatplanes taxiing up to the landing
mat streamed alongside, to be picked up by the aircraft crane. Photographed on 6 March
1945 during the Iwo Jima operation.

Those propellers must have had a short life. Taxiing on a wet runway/taxiway can cause noticable erosion so that must really play hell with blade life

And this is salt water spray also being ingested into the engine.
