I remember something about hoods worn by night aircrew to help 'adjust' early for night vision but that
time of the day looks very early.

Thing is, if it's only just a hood for instrument flying, why all the gubbings on his back that would almost certainly interfere with his sitting in a cockpit seat.

Early attempt at lego to plug the crew into the seat so they wouldn't fall out when turning. Actually, now I think about it.....

No because that has what appears to be radios and an antenna on the back and a pilot would not fit in his seat with that in between.
