The Army decided it needed a seaplane with a removable float of simplified design. But engine power was overestimated.Always jealous of the USN, the Army decided it needed its own carriers. Take-off was rather challenging ... landing-on was more so...... P-38 pilots were not impressed......
Remember when you were kids and you and your buddy would lash your rowboats together, then lash some plywood to the top, so you had a "bass boat"...yeah, like that. =)
It took concentration, determination, and skill to land on that pontoon boat.
