Often, longer wings are used to increase range or altitude. Consider the aspect ratio of a glider.
I agree, the extra span would do horrible things to the roll rate. Spits could be fitted with wing extensions to assist altitude performance, equally the clipped wing tips were an attempt to improve the roll rate of the Spitfire.
