I never realised JG.26 operated in North Africa but I see they did do a short stint there.

A Douglas Aircraft TBD-1 Devastator of VT-5 and BT-1 dive bombers of VB-5 at Naval Air Station North Island (San Diego) California. The red band indicates
it was assigned to the USS Ranger. This was between 1934 and 1938 when the Ranger was home ported in San Diego. Sometime in the later part of the 30's,
VT-5 moved to the Yorktown (when the ship was commissioned and joined the fleet) and got a green band.

Especially considering that they were painting out the red centers in SWPA already in March 1942

It was a low priority theater. When General Kenny took over, the supply chain improved.
