I feel that we tend to overlook the presence and importance of the Curtiss aircraft company between the wars and the prominence, variety and importance of their versatile Hawk series of same basic design aircraft, serving military as attack fighters, dive bombers, observation/liaison and racers. The biplanes also flew as parasol monoplanes; with all types of landing gear: with pants, retractable, floats and skis; all types of engines: inline, Vee, radial, super and turbocharged; for all three US services, civil and dozens of export buyers.
Designations included: A-3, P-1, P-3, P-6, P-17, P-23, F6C, F-11C, BF2C, O-1, O-39, civil Gulfhawk 1a as well as many experimental/trial IDs.
Udet's fascination with Hawk II is considered reason Germans focused on dive bombing, especially development of Junkers Stuka.
