I feel that we tend to overlook the presence and importance of the Curtiss aircraft company between the wars and the prominence, variety and importance of their versatile Hawk series of same basic design aircraft, serving military as attack fighters, dive bombers, observation/liaison and racers. The biplanes also flew as parasol monoplanes; with all types of landing gear: with pants, retractable, floats and skis; all types of engines: inline, Vee, radial, super and turbocharged; for all three US services, civil and dozens of export buyers.Fighting Squadron (VF) 2 - flying F6C-2 Hawks the net

Zippy it looks like a fire detection loop to my eyes, probably for detecting an exhaust overheat, but if it is a FD loop it would be attached to a warning light and horn, not a guage, as it is really on on/off type of switch, but I have never seen on mounted on a surface exposed to the external air flow. Usually they are in engine compartments, or accessory sections of nacelle's or wheel wells. Are those EGT probes on the exhaust?
