World War II hero US Army Captain Eli Wallach:
Wallach born in Redhook Brooklyn in 1915 was drafted into the US Army in 1940. He initially served as a staff sergeant and medic in a military hospital in Hawaii, providing medical care during the early years of World War II. Later, he attended Officer Candidate School in Abilene, Texas, where he trained and qualified as a medical administration officer. Throughout his service in the Army's Medical Administrative Corps (also referred to as the Medical Corps), Wallach was deployed to locations including North Africa and France, where he handled administrative duties in medical settings and supported hospital operations amid wartime conditions.
During his time in France, Wallach's background in performance was recognized, leading him to organize and write entertainment for troops and patients; he penned a play titled "Is This the Army?" that contributed to morale-boosting efforts and reportedly influenced Irving Berlin's famous production "This Is the Army."
After five years of service, he rose to the rank of Captain and was discharged in 1945 at the war's end, earning honors including the Army Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. This wartime experience in medicine and leadership shaped his disciplined approach, paving the way for his postwar return to acting and his eventual success as one of Hollywood's most versatile character actors.
This hero passed on June 24, 2014 (age 98 years), Manhattan, New York, NY.
