I was a Sea Explorer (Sea Scout) when I was a teen. Floyd Bennett Naval Air Station hosted our "ship". That's the sea scout equivalent of a Boy Scout Troop. Every Friday evening we'd hold our meetings there. Driving up Flatbush Avenue and seeing that welcoming rotating green/white beacon. Driving past the gate and sitting in a car, waiting for a P2V to taxi by. They had A-4 Skyhawks and KC-97s as well. The Coast Guard flew out of there as well. It was a cool place for a teen to hang out.

I know you copied the pic caption but it is incorrect. These Spitfires of No. 501 Squadron are the Mk.IIa. The leading Spitfire is of the serial P7378 what indicates it clearly. What is more the P7378 has the small bulge of the drop-shape just behind the spinner slightly above the panel lines between the bottom engine cowling and the side plate. The Mk.I/Ia didn't have it there. The next two kites seem to have it there as well. The No.501 Squadron used the Mk.IIa between the May and December 1941.

The modified canopy with the attached teardrop blister is interesting -- usually associated with the P.R . Spitfires
