It is probably Orange and is the G-22 Goshawk II, a Hybrid using F2F & F3F parts powered by a R-1820. Built for Al Williams, now in the National Air & Space Muesem

I believe it could be more likely the Grumman GG-1 demonstrator which was painted red, not orange like the Gulfhawks.

I thought about that type, but the A/C in the picture does not seem to have the extra interplane struts of the GG-1.

Yep ... actually the Grumman G-36A type ordered by the French Navy in 1939 initially. After the fall of France in 1940, these aircraft were taken over by Great Britain where they served in the FAA under the name Martlet Mk.I.

Probably because being a Military aircraft it did not meet the current CAA or CAB regulations?

IMHO ... nope. The GG-1 NX12V demonstartor had a different shape of the rudder, especially the trailing edge. It was stright while F2F/F3F had it more rounded. What is more the GG-1 had the bottom edge of the rudder fitted to the curvature of the fuselage ending. The F2F/F3F had it stright. All the features can be noticed in the pic of the red painted kite. Additionally there is a kind of the ventral fin at the fusealge end just behind of the tail wheel. The GG-1 demonstrator didn't have a such one there but instead of this there was a tail wheel. The next feature that doesn't indicate the GG-1 can be the lack of looking like the top aileron strut that may be noticed in the image you posted while in the color one can't be seen.

Edit IMHO I have found that kite .... it looks like it is a Grumman G-32A. A pity the number is not readable but it starts with NC I would say.

According to the net the Grumman G-36A (a temporary US Grumman civil registration NXG2) was a 1940 demonstrator and test aircraft for a carrier-based fighter. I have also seen the pictures of her with two more Martlets taken at Roosevelt Field.. One was of the registration NXG7 while the second one NXG3.

Wow! You guys have good eyes for detail! I sit corrected! So, not a Gulfhawk (which explains the lack of sunburst pattern on the upper wing), but not the GG-1 either. Named "The Red Ship" at Grumman, it later became a UC-103 in USAAF service, s/n 42-97045.
