Nothing "arguable" about it at all... on 3 December 1989, Gorbachev and Bush declared the Cold War* over at the Malta Summit... first flight of the Saab Gripen: December 9, 1988.

* However, many historians argue that the dissolution of the Soviet Union on 26 December 1991 was the end of the Cold War.

I've flown into Wiesbaden many, many times. For some reason I never remember the runway being long enough for fixed wing, but then I had to go back and look at some old pics, and it in fact was.
