Q: What do you fly?
A: Ughh…
Actual name was also rather odd taking into account the description of Hercules' feat where he defeats Antaeus. An Antei. "Cock" was just a NATO reporting name, not its actual name.
I was in Vietnam when the Army was replacing the OH-6 with the OH-58A.I always liked it too. Interestingly the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior was so overweighted with all the armament and equipment though. At least that is what buddy who was a Kiowa Warrior pilot told me.
When we flew into Iraq, we had two Kiowa Warriors with us all the way to Tikrit from Kuwait. We had to stop in Babylon so one of the Kiowa Warriors could be temp repaired. It blew outs it chin bubble when test firing its .50 cal.
I was in Vietnam when the Army was replacing the OH-6 with the OH-58A.
We were not happy faced with the change.
Both choppers had the same engine, maybe very slightly uprated on the OH-58, but not nearly enough because the OH-58 weighed over 600lbs more, empty.
No way it could keep up with the Cayuse, we knew it and the Army knew it.
The Army ended up using the early model Kiowas on softer duties, unless they had no choice, because they were out of Cayuses.
Once they uprated the engines another 100 hp or so, and went to the 4 blade rotor, the OH-58 became what it needed to be in 1970.
