The Douglas AD Skyraider was just great, right? How to make it even better? Replace that big old R-3350 with a turbine! The result was the Douglas A2D Skyshark!

Unfortunately it lost the Ugliest Ever Naval Aircraft contest to the Fairey Gannet. But it was a good try!

Sort of reminds me of Wasserkuppe, Germany. I was stationed in Wildflecken, only about 10 miles away, in the early 70's.
Though there were many such sites like that all over Europe at the time, just a few miles from the East German and Czech border.
It had more radar radomes when I was there, but they were always improving the radars and changing things, seems like I remember 4 or 5.
