Batini Beriev VVA-14 1970
In the 1970s the Soviet Union developed a vertical take-off amphibious aircraft called the VVA-14, which could take off from water or land, and fly at great speed for prolonged distances. The design also allowed the aircraft to fly just above the water's surface by means of an 'aerodynamic cushion'. It was designed by Italian-born designer Robert Bartini. The primary purpose of the VVA-14 was to destroy the United States Navy's Polaris missile submarines.

Batini Beriev VVA-14 1970
Only Bartini. Beriev had no connection to the project - he left his position as chief designer in 1968 and was replaced by Konstantinov. The aircraft was assembled at the Taganrog plant, where Beriev aircraft (designed when Beriev was chief designer) were manufactured, but the design bureau headed by Konstantinov was mainly engaged in preparing the engineering documentation for the VVA-14.

Roberto Oros di Bartini always thought big, and the VVA-14 was just a step toward projects like this one:

Bartinis fever dream the A-57.... Bartinis proposal for a parasite aircraft carrier that was envisioned as a massive, water-based, supersonic flying boat with a long-range, capable of carrying a nuclear weapon and a parasite reconnaissance aircraft. The project was cancelled in 1957, when the Soviet Union shifted its focus to developing ballistic missiles instead of bombers
