My high school classmate, fellow Civil Air Patrol Cadet member was a mechanic on these in Laos when we were "not there".

I have a friend who flew T-28 with the 606th in Laos. He was a USAF enlisted man, although the paperwork said he was a civilian working for another agency. One aspect of the T-28 use was that some have podded .50 cal, carried like bombs, while others have low profile .50 cal installations with ammo supply built into the wing. Never been clear to me which was employed where.

I have a friend who flew T-28 with the 606th in Laos. He was a USAF enlisted man, although the paperwork said he was a civilian working for another agency. One aspect of the T-28 use was that some have podded .50 cal, carried like bombs, while others have low profile .50 cal installations with ammo supply built into the wing. Never been clear to me which was employed where.

The .50 pods seem to have first been used by the French Armée de l'Air for COIN air support in Algéria.

There were no US Navy T-28Bs available, so Sud Aviation had to refurbish surplus T-28As. They were equipped with Wright R-1830 engines from condemned B-17s, triple blades propellers, four wing supports enabling to carry 120 kg bombs, rockets pods or .50 MGs pods. They were designated T-28S Fennec. According to various sources, this concerned between 150 or 245 planes.

This inspirated the US planners who had NAA convert 321 T-28As and Fairchild 72 T-28As into 393 T-28Ds with P&W R-1820 engines and triple blades propellers and six wing supports.
