What engine is the RG1SML?.

(Calum will know better)
My take:
R - Rolls Royce
G - Griffon
1 - 1st design? 1st type? (possibly not made, the first 3-speed Griffon that I know about was the RG3SML - a.k.a. Griffon 101 - that was outfitted with a 2-stage S/C)
S, M, L = it has a 3 speed S/C

Doing a bit more reading on the Spiteful, the RAF found it impossible to keep the wing clean as to take advantage of laminar flow with mud grass bugs and insects effecting performance, it was fast when it did work, 494mph.

1 is the engine rating.

S = fully supercharged (high altitude)
M = medium supercharged (mid altitude)
L = low supercharged (low altitude)

I am surprised that there would be a RG1SML. Maybe a typo and it is supposed to be RG10SML?

I would think that the Griffon Mk II would have a rating of RG1SM.

I think Tomo is correct, it should be RG3SML, not RG1SML. The first Griffon with a 3-speed, 2-stage Supercharger.
