Reserching a planes history???

I am having a problem researching a planes history and I have a couple of questions that I think you guys might be able to help me with...
1) Is there a online database of aircraft serial numbers? If so, where?
2) How can someone deterimine what happened to a certain aircraft? Ex - Shot down? Used for target practice? Mothballed? Sold for scrap?

well, that will depend entirely on the plane you're searching for, information on different planes will be found in different places, what plane are you researching??

first you should indicate the type of a/c then we can all go from there....

do you have also date of inquiry and pilot ?

Its also quite hard to pinpoint what youre looking for, its a large web page. Good though, you can find loads on it 8)
