.... he was an actor who did not take himself seriously. When you get to be over-the-top James Bond it provides some perspective on the real you, IMO.
An early B&W film of his "The Hill" is worth tracking down.

'The Hill' was 3 years after 'Dr. No'.

The original James Bond actor was Barry Nelson in a 1954 TV version of 'Casino Royale'.

Two great films of Connery that receive little promotion are

Zardoz - a late 60's way-out-there science fiction about a dystopian future. fun fantasy with moral ideas.

Outland - set on a mining colony on Mars where Connery plays a security man chasing down a drug distribution network. hard reality.
