Here's a few more images of NASM Il-2. The data plate was remanufactured based upon original drawings. It is a notice to ground crew about charging the pneumatic system. I did not know that the Il-2 had a pneumatic system. Makes me think of the Yak-52.

The Russians were in love with pneumatic systems on their aircraft. Less chance of them freezing up in the low temps vs hydraulic.

There is an air compressor AK-50 in addition to air vessels inside airframe. System was designed for 50 bars.

Many Brit planes had pneumatic systems for wheel brakes and carb air temp and filters.

The Lysander has pneumatic brakes. I watched one wander off the field in a show about the restored plane.

The Chippie I used to fly still had those goofy British air brakes...Pull the lever on the stick and use the rudder pedals for differential braking.

and battery voltages degrade very rapidly once you get below freezing whereas pneumatic starters work at any temperature.

The Chippie I used to fly still had those goofy British air brakes...Pull the lever on the stick and use the rudder pedals for differential braking.

Same with Spitfire, Hurricane, Lanc, and Mosquito.

And pretty much every other British aircraft that did not have cable brakes. This continued right up to, and maybe past, the Viscount airliner and also on the Fokker F27
