I've been looking into the history of Spitfire MH434, and I'm trying to figure out whether this aircraft was built as an IX variant or whether it was built as another variant and later converted into an IX.

On a related note, I have been able to find the construction number for this aircraft, which is "CBAF-IX-552". Would I be correct in assuming that the middle section ("IX") represents the variant it was built as? If my assumption is correct, then that would answer my question.

Max, many Spitfires were contracted as one Mark but built as another Mark.

For example, your MH434 was from the 9th order for 2190 Spitfire Mk VCs but were built as Mks VC, IX, X, XI and XII.
