Good morning, everyone. This piece was recovered during an excavation. It appears to belong to a Spitfire that crashed in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in Italy. Could anyone tell me what it is? Thank you very much.

Using other languages than the English in the regular threads is allowed in the Multilingual Corner section only. So please use the English here. I have translated your post and edited it in order to keep the order.

Comunque mica altri disegni a riguardo? E grazie ancora

Ciao buongiorno. Mi dici come devo fare per postarlo nella giusta sezione? Purtroppo faccio tutto tramite cellulare e oltre a non capire come fare mi traduce tutto. Grazie

UPDATE – Spitfire part identification: new technical information
Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you very much to those who have already contributed suggestions to this discussion.

Unfortunately, my mysterious component remains unidentified, despite several attempts to contact Spitfire restoration specialists and historical archives.

I would therefore like to share some additional technical information and ask for your help with a more specific investigation.

The component has the following characteristics:

  • Approximate outside diameter: 150–160 mm (about 6 inches).
  • Weight: 396 grams (approximately 14 oz).
  • Material: apparently a copper-based alloy, possibly bronze or brass.
  • Three-spoke construction.
  • Two circumferential grooves or stepped profiles around the outer rim.
  • Unusual central recess and a separate removable metallic element.
Some members have suggested that it could be associated with a carburettor, perhaps a venturi or diffuser, or possibly a valve-operating cam.

I have investigated these suggestions, particularly in relation to the S.U. and Bendix-Stromberg carburettors used on Merlin engines, but I have not yet found a matching component.

Another possibility worth checking is an aircraft cable-control drum.

During my research, I found the following original Supermarine engineering drawing references:

30033 Sheet 6 – Assembly of Aileron Control Drum & Shaft in Fuselage

34933 Sheet 9 – Assembly Aileron Control Drum

34933 Sheet 10 – Aileron Control Drum

Unfortunately, I have not been able to examine these drawings.

My main question is: does anyone have access to these Supermarine drawings, or photographs of an original Spitfire aileron control drum, and could compare them with my component?

Even a simple confirmation that the shapes are completely different would be extremely valuable.

I would also welcome any alternative identification supported by a photograph, parts catalogue, or engineering drawing.

The component was reportedly recovered from a Spitfire crash site in the Italian Apennines, although this provenance has not yet been independently confirmed.

I am not seeking a valuation or commercial authentication. My only aim is to identify this historical object as accurately as possible.

Thank you again for your patience and for any further assistance.

Best regards from Italy,
