The unit is a cast aluminum air box assembly (part number VS-23658) and the three discs are backfire valves.

Have begun oil paint wash weathering on underside. Any suggestions on gloves/material to avoid fingerprints?

Latex gloves, but without talcum powder.

Looking good. Agree about the gloves. Flat paint seems to attract finger prints

Got it finished. Tamiya Kit 61046. The decals I used came with the kit. There were decals for three different versions. In researching the aircraft and USMC VMF-213, I discovered this depiction here:

Which led me to these two sites about the pilot, Lt. Foy R. Garison, posthumously promoted to Captain:

It's fun to find out a bit of the "provenance" of a model, although my version probably digresses a bit from Garison's actual fighter. I enjoyed this build.
