Yep, it's the data transfer cable - bought it just for that.


I see. But it can the the reason for the trouble. Do you have the old one? May be it should be used instead of the new one. If you had used it before with the laptop the Windows should have saved the settings for that and all should work when you connecting the devices together later again.
 
My original card reader was in my camera bag, which was stolen in December 2017. I replaced all equipment except the card reader, as it wasn't being used.

I'm beginning to think it is a problem with the usb ports on my PC, as the port where the broadband dongle connects has started to disconnect occasionally, if the connecting cable is disturbed.
Also, I have successfully downloaded pics direct from my cameras fairly recently, so I doubt the problem is support ending on Win 10.
I'll check things via my laptop when I'm back in Norfolk next week, and if that works, then I'll know it's my PC at fault and will have it checked or even replaced.
